Life as a freelancer: plenty of time for the things I love.

We absolutely love this mountain town. We ended our trip last fall by staying a couple days here, but we wanted to return and spend more time exploring the area. Salida has so much character and so much beauty that we could spend weeks hanging out there. Actually, we wouldn’t mind living there and have been discussing that possibility… There are plenty of beautiful towns in the colorful state of Colorado, of course, but we love this one because it strikes the perfect balance between adventure and comfort. You can spend all day outside and still eat a delicious dinner at a local restaurant. You can see incredible sights, and yet feel like you’re part of a community rather than a crowded tourist town. For that reason, we want to share some of what we love most about this charming mountain town and offer some ideas for things to do IN Salida, Colorado.

The next post will be about things to do AROUND Salida (hiking, adventure, water sports, etc.). This post is dedicated more to the town itself, the town that lies “in-between the mountains.”

Eat and Drink in Salida

Everything tastes better after a day of adventure. That’s a fact.

Benson’s Tavern and Beer Garden

This spot offers the perfect laid back setting to kick back with a good beer, some great friends, and often times live music to wind down from a big day.

Amica’s Pizza, Microbrews, & More

This is actually the only place we made it to both last fall and this spring. We always want to try new things, but we couldn’t help return to this spot for delicious food and great atmosphere.

The 146 Taphouse

The concept is so simple and so brilliant. You’re assigned a card. Your card allows you to access the tap and pour as little as much as you like. Taste it, then pour more if you like it or move on to the next. Then sit down with your pals and enjoy.

Stay in Salida

More to come about where to camp in the area in the next post, but if that’s not your style, or if you just really need a shower after a few days sleeping on the ground, check out these inexpensive, cozy spots.

Simple Lodge and Hostel

We landed two of our earliest interviews (Jeff Garmire and Tony Ondrus) while staying at this spot close to the heart of Downtown Salida.

Salida Farm

Jackson surprised me with this stay after we’d camped for a few days. Patrick is an excellent host who has done a great job repurposing materials to create the perfect spot to enjoy the area. We fell in love with the location and so enjoyed talking to the people that call this property home.

Adventure

The next post is going to be all about adventure in the realm of hiking, rafting, paddling, etc. But this spot at the top of S Mountain is actually one you can drive to. Cross the river and take Spiral Drive up to enjoy the view.
